Key Issue 1:

Higher mortality rates for the major diseases.
 

Aim:

Improving Health.


Objective:
Tobacco control including smoking cessation services.
Action
  • Revise the Action Plan for Tobacco Control.
  • Develop a smoking policy for the Derwentside Partnership.
  • Review and implement a new model of smoking cessation services in Derwentside.
  • Support pregnant mothers to stop smoking.
  • Create more smoke free public areas.
  • Reduce smoking in manual groups.

Impact by 2010
  • The national target is to reduce smoking rates among manual groups from 32% to 26% by 2010 from the 1998 baseline. The local target is to have 1,530 people from all groups in Derwentside successfully quitting at four weeks by 2006.
  • The local target is to reduce the proportion of women who continue to smoke throughout pregnancy by 1% per year, with the proportion of women continuing to smoke in pregnancy falling from 22.7% in 2002 to 18.6% in 2006.

Objective:
Promoting better mental health, and preventing chronic diseases and accidents.
Action
  • Develop an Accident Prevention Strategy.
  • Develop a Falls Prevention Strategy.
  • Implement the Mental Health Promotion Strategy.
  • Implement the “5 A Day” Programme.
  • Drug Action Team to develop an Alcohol Strategy.
  • Improve the health of adults via the “Working for Health Award”, a healthy workplace initiative.
  • Extend the breast screening service to women aged 65 to 70.

Impact by 2010
  • To reduce the death rates from the causes below by 2010 from a 1997 baseline:

    accidents and suicide (and undetermined injury) by at least a fifth.
    coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in people under 75 years of age by at least two-fifths.
    cancer in people under 75 years of age by at least one fifth.


Objective:
Provide improved access to physical activities opportunities which promote a healthier lifestyle.
Action
  • Increase awareness of healthier lifestyles.
  • Develop programmes to promote health.
  • Encourage participation in physical activities.
  • Strengthen support to voluntary sports clubs.
  • Review the level and quality of facilities.
  • Work to reduce levels of child obesity.

  • Increase numbers of residents undertaking physical activity to 70%.
