Key Issues, Aims and Impacts

 

Key Issue 1:

Sustainability in the generation, regeneration and conservation of the built environment
 

Aim:

To apply the principles of sustainability to the development, regeneration and conservation of the built environment

 

Objectives:

  • To have a co-ordinated approach to the regeneration of town and villages centres

  • To promote, encourage and publicise best practice principles for sustainable
    construction and design.

  • To identify areas of housing in ‘low demand’ within the district and to develop and implement sustainable solutions in respect of those areas.

  • To reduce the number of long term vacant dwellings.

  • To reduce the number of private sector homes which are unfit for human habitation

  • To ensure that housing stock balances the needs and preferences of the communities in Derwentside.

Key Issue 2:

Better understanding of our landscape and biodiversity and its relevance to our community


Aim:

To promote better understanding so as to protect and enhance our landscape and biodiversity

 

Objectives:

  • To ensure no net loss to the designated landscape and biodiversity baseline indicators in Derwentside.

  • To develop activities to contribute to delivery of biodiversity action plans.

Key Issue 3:

The non-sustainable use of our natural resources 


Aim:

To protect and improve the quality of our natural resources

 

Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the importance of Derwentside’s natural resources and potential impacts upon it.

  • To promote the use of renewable energy in new developments.

  • To decrease the amount of waste being tipped or transported and increase the amount of waste recycled, composted or reused.

Key Issue 4:

Poor provision of public and sustainable transport and the effect of increased traffic on quality of life

Aim:

To reduce the adverse effects of increased traffic on the environment and encourage the use of public and sustainable transport

 

Objectives:

  • To encourage more people to use other forms of transport than the private car for local journeys

  • To reduce the number of vehicle journeys

  • To reduce the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.
