Key Issue 4:
Poor provision of public and sustainable transport and the effect of increased traffic on quality of life
Aim:
To reduce the adverse effects of increased traffic on the environment and encourage the use of public and sustainable transport.
| Objective: |
| To encourage more people to use other forms of transport than the private car for local journeys. |
| Action |
- Promote the existing footpath and cycle network and the associated health
benefits.
- Promote the County Durham Rural Transport Initiative.
- Ensure that existing cycle ways and footpaths have clear well defined
urban links.
- Maximise the impact of the Sustainable Transport Education Project.
- Investigate surfacing urban cycle paths with tarmac and provide lighting.
- Improve bus waiting and information facilities.
- Progress the creation and promotion of a comprehensive sustainable transport network offering a real alternative to car
use.
- Encourage employers to actively encourage and promote a reduction in
non-essential car use.
- Promote and support safe routes to schools, community facilities and shopping centres.

- A network covering the whole of Derwentside which offers services which

- All applicable schools actively promote and support safe routes to school
projects.

- Promote Safe Routes to School Programme and walking or cycling to school.
- Encourage the take up of grants for rural transport initiatives.

- Investigate new ways of working to reduce the need for travel.

- Investigate traffic calming and speed restrictions in residential

- Consider actions to prevent indiscriminate parking.
