Key Issue 3:

The non-sustainable use of our natural resources.
 

Aim:

To protect and improve the quality of our natural resources.


Objective:
To raise awareness of the importance of Derwentside’s natural resources and potential impacts upon it.
Action
  • Produce and support templates for sustainability checklists and encourage their use.
  • Share good practice of projects that have minimised impacts on the District’s natural resources.
  • Use of secondary aggregates in building works.
  • Discourage the use of peat and promote alternatives.
  • Encourage appropriate planting of trees and woodlands.
  • Encourage habitat creation schemes.
  • Maintain, and where appropriate, improve air and river quality across the District.
  • Explore use of alternative fuels for vehicles

  • 100% of applications for developments consider the use of renewable energy.
  • All development applications demonstrate consideration of energy reduction.
  • Developments demonstrate a meeting of the targets in approved applications.

Objective:
To promote the use of renewable energy in new developments.
Action
  • Develop an accurate baseline for measurement.
  • Raise awareness of, and remove barriers to, considering renewable energy use.
  • Provide an advice network for organisations and groups to raise awareness of renewable energy use.
  • Encourage the setting of targets for energy usage and renewable energy consumption.
  • Continue initiatives and incentives to promote the reduction in energy use

  • Realisation of the Government's Strategy Document “ Waste
    Not Want Not “ i.e. the growth of household waste is reduced
    from 3% per annum to 2% per annum i.e. less than the growth
    in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Objective:
To decrease the amount of waste being tipped or transported and increase the amount of waste recycled, composted or reused.
Action
  • Continue initiatives and incentives to promote recycling and waste minimisation. 
  • Set further targets for reductions in waste production. 
  • Support national and regional waste minimisation and recycling campaigns.
  • Promote the use of reusable or recycled products and reduce the consumption of unnecessary packaging. 
  • Develop and implement a green composting scheme.
  • To maintain a clean and attractive environment by promoting the use of appropriate methods of litter disposal.
