Better understanding of our landscape and biodiversity and its relevance to our community.
 

Aim:

To promote better understanding so as to protect and enhance our landscape and biodiversity.


Objective:
To ensure no net loss to the designated landscape and biodiversity baseline indicators in Derwentside.
Action
  • Identify and audit key landscapes and biodiversity of Derwentside.
  • Designation and appropriate management, with community involvement of biodiversity resources within the district.
  • Engage communities in the management of locally important sites for biodiversity.
  • Assess brownfield sites proposed for development for their biodiversity value.
  • Encourage the preparation of biodiversity and landscape management plans, with resources provided for designated sites.
  • Ensure most organisations and community groups recognise the importance of biodiversity.
  • Recognise the benefits to health of landscape and biodiversity

  • All designated sites have appropriate management plans and resources, and that protection of the environment and its biodiversity, are an essential consideration in any planning and development applications and proposals. 
  • All fragile species and habitats are identified and protected as appropriate. 
  • All organisations and community groups will have an active Biodiversity Strategy and Council development controls will require positive environmental gain in all planning applications. 
  • All organisations have adopted sustainability and biodiversity policies.

Objective:
To develop activities to contribute to delivery of biodiversity action plans.
Action
  • Actively share best practice on biodiversity.
  • Reduce the negative impacts of new developments on biodiversity.
  • Secure positive environmental gain in all major developments.
  • Produce a template Biodiversity Strategy for organisations and businesses to adopt.
