Emerging Issues
Climate Change
The scientific evidence is stronger now than ever before that climate change is linked with human activity (especially emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other ‘greenhouse’ gases from
industry, transport and energy generation). The impacts of climate change are likely to be felt everywhere and Derwentside needs to consider not only the impact of its activities but also any adaptations which need to be made to cope with the current effects of climate change.
Low Demand Housing
Many areas within Northern England, and to a lesser extent elsewhere, are experiencing rapid changes within the housing market which is resulting in a falling demand for local authority rented housing and significant numbers of vacant and often abandoned privately owned homes. Research indicates that within the foreseeable future this problem could affect over 4,000 properties within this district.
