Aim:

To support the growth and competitiveness of existing businesses


Objective:
Extending Business Clustering Initiatives.
Action
  • A Derwentside Energy Saving Company (ESCO) will be established to assist with the purchasing of utilities and services.
  • Expand membership of the Derwentside Engineering Forum to the broader
    manufacturing sector.
  • Participation by the Forum in a pilot project to create a collaborative trading hub with member companies from the Northern Defence Initiative.

Impact by 2010
  • Businesses will be assisted with bulk purchasing and inter-trading, while the ESCO support service will allow cost savings for SMEs.
  • The Derwentside Engineering Forum will have extended its role and will have at least 40 members.

Objective:
Enhancing Business Support.
Action
  • An ICT business support service will be established to deliver ICT training, broadband connectivity, provision of web servers and hosting, digital printing and IP telephony.

  • A full ICT support service will be in place, offering businesses a comprehensive service menu.

Objective:
Promoting Process Flexibility.
Action
  • A Manufacturing Agility Project will be delivered to help businesses improve their competitiveness by addressing four key areas of responsiveness:

Manufacturing Strategy
Physical Plant and Equipment
Product Design and Customers
Market Responsiveness
